The honest take

Where each option fits.

Apple Dictation

Apple Dictation is a genuinely strong free built-in. It works anywhere you can type on Mac, iPhone, and iPad, and on Apple silicon it processes supported languages on-device with no internet after speech models download. Auto-punctuation is available in many languages, there is no length timeout, and Keyboard settings show whether processing is on-device. For Apple-only users who do not need custom vocabulary or history, that is often enough.

WhisperJot

WhisperJot adds the dictation tools Apple's documentation does not describe: custom vocabulary, hold-to-talk and toggle hotkeys, per-app tone, and local SQLite history. Jot Local and Jot Local Pro run on-device by default and work fully offline on stable Mac and Windows apps plus a Linux beta. The $99/year plan includes unlimited dictation. Optional Jot Cloud is opt-in behind explicit consent, used only while selected, and audio is never stored on our servers.

Questions

Does Apple Dictation work offline?

Yes, for supported languages on a Mac with Apple silicon after the speech models are downloaded. On Intel Macs, or in languages without on-device support, dictated utterances are sent to Apple and need internet. WhisperJot's Jot Local and Jot Local Pro engines work fully offline on its supported Mac, Windows, and Linux builds after a one-time model download (about 500 MB on Mac, around 600 MB on Windows and Linux).

Does Apple Dictation have custom vocabulary?

Apple's Dictation documentation does not describe a custom vocabulary feature, so this comparison does not claim Apple Dictation has none. It also does not document hold-to-talk versus toggle modes, dictation history, or per-app tone. WhisperJot includes custom vocabulary, both hotkey modes, per-app tone, and local SQLite history on its $99-per-year plan.

Does Apple Dictation work on Windows or Linux?

No. Apple Dictation is available on macOS, iOS, and iPadOS only. There is no Windows or Linux version. WhisperJot provides stable macOS 14+ Apple Silicon and Windows 10+ x64 builds, plus beta Debian and Ubuntu Linux builds for x64 and arm64. Apple Dictation remains a strong free choice when all of your dictation stays on Apple devices.

Where does Apple Dictation process audio?

On Apple silicon Macs, supported languages can be processed on-device with no internet. Otherwise, dictated text is processed on Apple servers but is not stored unless you opt in to Improve Siri and Dictation, which keeps opt-in data for up to two years. Search-box dictation may be sent to the search provider. WhisperJot's local engines keep audio on the computer by default, with optional Jot Cloud only while selected.

Is Apple upgrading Dictation in 2026?

Apple announced on June 8, 2026 an upgraded dictation for macOS 27 and iOS 27 with automatic capitalization, punctuation, and formatting, starting with English. The most capable on-device model is limited to M3 and later Macs with 12 GB or more of memory, and to recent iPhones and iPads.
