Documented capabilities
We only list features each vendor publishes on its own site or help pages. If a capability is not on those public pages, it is not claimed here.
Speech to text and dictation overlap: these desktop dictation apps, plus WhisperJot, are each tagged with what the app is best for. This is not a ranked list and it is not a meeting-bot roundup — those live on the meeting transcription page. Facts about other vendors come from their public pages.

Cloud, on-device, or a mix: we repeat the vendor's stated processing location and whether a fully offline path is documented.
Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android appear only when a vendor's public pages list them. Missing platforms are called out rather than assumed.
Price lines are paraphrased from each vendor's public pricing. Free plans, trials, and one-time licenses are included when their public pages document them.

A speech to text app can be a cloud dictation client, a local-model desktop tool, or a file transcription app with dictation on the side. This page lists those desktop options with a best-for angle. WhisperJot is our speech-to-text desktop app: hotkey dictation into the focused app, on-device by default, $99/year, with an opt-in Jot Cloud engine. Meeting bots are covered separately.
In practice the queries overlap. Dictation software usually means speaking into the app that already has focus. Speech to text can also mean file transcription or meeting notes. This roundup covers desktop dictation apps with facts from each vendor's public pages. File-first MacWhisper is included because it ships shortcut dictation. Otter, Granola, and Fireflies are on the meeting transcription page instead.
WhisperJot's local engines work fully offline after the first download. Superwhisper works fully offline with local models on Apple Silicon. MacWhisper and Dragon Professional v16 document local offline recognition. Wispr Flow is cloud-only. Aqua Voice does not advertise an offline mode. Willow advertises an offline mode while its Frontier models still need a connection. Always check the linked alternative page for the dated source.
Several products here document free access: Wispr Flow's word-capped free plan, Superwhisper's small-model free tier, MacWhisper's free local transcriptions, Willow Basic, and Aqua Starter with 1,000 free words. WhisperJot is not a free speech to text app; it offers a 30-second browser demo and a $99/year desktop plan. macOS and Windows also include built-in dictation.
