How to dictate in Slack
straight into the message box

Slack does not include live dictation for its message field. Put the cursor in a message box and use macOS Dictation, Windows voice typing, or WhisperJot; WhisperJot inserts cleaned-up text in the focused field with one global hotkey.

Native options

No built-in dictation in Slack

Slack has no built-in feature that turns live speech into text in the message field. Its audio and video clips are a different workflow: clips can run for up to five minutes on all plans, and a transcript can be generated on demand after recording. For live text entry, macOS Dictation works from the Keyboard settings and Windows voice typing opens with Win+H. WhisperJot is another system-wide option that types into the active Slack field without a plugin.

One hotkey across apps

Dictate in Slack with WhisperJot

  1. Install WhisperJot, open Slack, and click in the channel message, thread reply, or direct-message field where the text should go.
  2. Press ⌥Space on macOS or Ctrl+Alt+Space on Windows and Linux; on a Mac, holding fn is another way to dictate.
  3. Speak while live partials appear in the floating HUD, then review the punctuated text WhisperJot places in Slack before sending it.
  4. Choose push-to-talk, toggle, or hands-free mode to match whether you are giving a quick reply or composing a longer update.

Messages, not recordings

Speech becomes text in the focused Slack message box, while filler removal helps keep a fast spoken reply concise.

A Slack-specific voice

Per-app tone can keep Slack copy conversational even when another app in your workflow is set to more formal writing.

No Slack add-on

The desktop hotkey targets whichever app has focus, so there is no Slack plugin to install or workspace integration to approve.

Offline speech processing

Local engines run on-device by default and work fully offline after the roughly 2.3 GB first download.

Questions

Straight answers.

Does Slack have built-in voice dictation for messages?

Slack does not provide live dictation in its message field. Audio and video clips can be recorded for up to five minutes on all plans, then transcribed on demand after the recording. That transcript workflow is for a recorded clip rather than speech-to-text entry in a channel, thread, or direct message.

How can I dictate a Slack message on Mac or Windows?

On a Mac, enable Dictation under System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation, then use it while the Slack message field is active. On Windows 11, click the message field and press Win+H for voice typing; Microsoft says that feature requires an internet connection. WhisperJot provides its own global shortcut on supported desktop systems.

Can WhisperJot remove filler words from a Slack message?

WhisperJot can remove filler words and add punctuation and capitalization before inserting the result into the focused Slack field. Live partials remain visible in its floating HUD while you speak, giving you a chance to follow the transcription before the finished message text appears for review.

Can Slack dictation sound casual without changing my email style?

WhisperJot supports a separate tone for each app. You can configure a casual tone for Slack while keeping a more formal setting for email or another writing tool. Per-app injection overrides are also available when a particular text field needs different insertion behavior from the rest of your desktop workflow.
