How to dictate in WhatsApp Desktop
into the text box, not a voice note

WhatsApp Desktop has no speech-to-text into the chat box; the composer microphone sends an audio voice message. Dictate typed chats with macOS Dictation, Windows voice typing, or WhisperJot. Voice message transcripts for received notes are rolling out and are documented on phones, not as desktop steps here.

Native options

No built-in dictation in WhatsApp Desktop

WhatsApp Desktop does not convert live speech into text in the compose field on any platform. The microphone in the composer records and sends an audio voice message. Voice message transcripts, announced 21 November 2024, transcribe received voice notes on-device for the recipient; WhatsApp documents that workflow on iPhone and Android (Settings > Chats > Voice message transcripts, then tap-and-hold a voice message > Transcribe). WhatsApp's desktop and web help pages say the feature may not be available to you yet, so treat desktop transcripts as rolling out rather than a Mac or Windows how-to. For typed dictation, use macOS Dictation, Windows voice typing, or WhisperJot.

One hotkey across apps

Dictate in WhatsApp Desktop with WhisperJot

  1. Install WhisperJot, open WhatsApp Desktop, and click inside the chat compose box.
  2. Press ⌥Space on a Mac or Ctrl+Alt+Space on Windows or Linux; Mac users may instead hold fn while talking.
  3. Follow the live partial transcript in the floating HUD, then stop to insert punctuated text into the WhatsApp field.
  4. Review the message in WhatsApp before sending; optional spoken “press enter” can send, and no WhatsApp plugin is required.

Text in the compose box

Speech becomes editable chat text instead of an outgoing voice note, so you can revise wording before you send.

Casual chat tone

Per-app tone lets WhatsApp stay conversational while other apps keep a different writing style.

Cleanup before you send

Filler-word removal, spoken punctuation, and self-correction help a spoken reply read more like a typed one.

Local engines by default

Select a local engine and transcription stays on-device by default, including offline use after a one-time model download (about 500 MB on Mac, around 600 MB on Windows and Linux). Jot Cloud is opt-in.

Questions

Straight answers.

Can WhatsApp Desktop turn speech into typed chat text?

No. WhatsApp does not provide speech-to-text into the text box on any platform. The composer microphone records an audio voice message rather than inserting words you can edit as text. To dictate a typed chat, focus the compose field and use macOS Dictation, Windows voice typing with Win+H, or a system-wide tool such as WhisperJot.

What does the microphone button do in WhatsApp Desktop?

The mic in the composer sends an audio voice message. It is not a dictation control for the text field. Recipients hear the recording rather than reading dictated text in the chat box. If you want words you can edit, spell-check, or copy, dictate into the text box with operating-system speech input or WhisperJot instead of tapping that microphone.

Are WhatsApp voice message transcripts available on desktop?

Voice message transcripts transcribe received voice notes on-device for the recipient. WhatsApp documents enabling them on iPhone and Android under Settings > Chats > Voice message transcripts, then tap-and-hold a voice message and choose Transcribe. Desktop and web help pages say the feature may not be available to you yet, so this guide treats it as rolling out and does not give Mac or Windows transcript steps.

How do I dictate a WhatsApp message on Mac or Windows?

Click in the WhatsApp Desktop compose box. On a Mac, enable Dictation in System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation, start with the Dictation shortcut or Edit > Start Dictation, and stop with Esc; it has no length timeout and stops after 30 seconds of silence. On Windows, press Win+H, wait for “Listening…”, and speak; internet is required because voice typing uses Microsoft's online speech recognition. WhisperJot uses one global hotkey in the same field.
