History, recordings, and retention
Transcripts are stored locally unless you turn Store transcription history off. On macOS, Keep dictation audio is on by default with a 14-day retention. History can re-transcribe saved audio; that never types into an app.
Where is history stored, and how long is audio kept?
macOS stores transcripts in ~/Library/Application Support/WhisperJot/whisperjot.sqlite. Windows uses %LOCALAPPDATA%\WhisperJot\whisperjot.db. Linux stores them under ~/.local/share/WhisperJot/. Privacy settings include Store transcription history.
On macOS, Keep dictation audio is on by default and keeps each dictation's audio locally so History can re-transcribe it. Retention is 14 days by default, with 7, 14, 30, or 90 day options. History age limit is off by default, with 30 day, 90 day, or 1 year options. Meeting audio retention is 90 days by default (30, 90, 180, or never). Meeting transcripts are never auto-deleted.
What can I do with History, and how do I import a file?
Each History row can Copy, Delete, Re-transcribe, or be part of Export. Re-transcribe uses saved audio with your current engine settings and never types into an app. Export writes Markdown grouped by day. Privacy → Clear History Now removes the history you have stored.
Menu bar → Transcribe Audio File… imports wav, mp3, m4a, aiff, and similar files. The maximum is 60 minutes per file, and the result lands in History. Errors you may see include couldn't be read as audio, contains no audio, no speech was found, and finish the current dictation first.

Does re-transcribe type into whatever app I have focused?
No. Re-transcribe uses the saved audio with your current engine settings and writes the new transcript to History. It never types into an app. Use it after you change engine, language, or cleanup. On macOS this depends on Keep dictation audio still having the file. If the opt-in Jot Cloud engine is selected, re-transcribe sends that saved recording to the cloud the same way a live Cloud dictation would.
How long does WhisperJot keep meeting audio?
Meeting audio retention is 90 days by default. You can choose 30, 90, 180 days, or never. Meeting transcripts are never auto-deleted, even when the audio is removed. Dictation audio on macOS is a separate Keep dictation audio control, 14 days by default. History age limit for transcripts is off unless you pick 30 days, 90 days, or 1 year.
Can I transcribe an existing audio file in WhisperJot?
Yes. Choose Transcribe Audio File… from the menu bar. Supported types include wav, mp3, m4a, and aiff, with a 60-minute cap per file. The transcript lands in History rather than in the focused app. You may see couldn't be read as audio, contains no audio, no speech was found, or finish the current dictation first if a live take is still running.
