How to dictate on a Mac

How to dictate on a Mac with built-in Dictation

macOS includes Dictation in System Settings. The steps below match Apple's Mac User Guide for macOS 14 Sonoma, macOS 15 Sequoia, and macOS 26 Tahoe. Check your own shortcut rather than assuming one default key.

  1. Turn Dictation on. Open the Apple menu, choose System Settings, select Keyboard in the sidebar, open Dictation, and turn it on. Confirm Enable when asked. The first run asks whether to share audio recordings with Apple; Not Now is fine.
  2. Check the Dictation shortcut. Apple's current shortcut list gives Fn-D, and older Macs used press fn twice, but do not assume either one. Open System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation > Shortcut and choose a preset or Customize (for example Option-Z). Use the shortcut shown there.
  3. Start dictation. Click in a text field, then press the Microphone key in the function row if your Mac has one, press the shortcut you just confirmed, or choose Edit > Start Dictation. Speak in complete thoughts.
  4. Add punctuation and line breaks. Say commands such as comma, period, question mark, new line, new paragraph, caps on, caps off, all caps, and numeral. Auto-punctuation for commas, periods, and question marks is available in supported languages; toggle it under Keyboard > Dictation.
  5. Stop when you are done. Dictation has no length timeout. It stops automatically after 30 seconds of silence, or you can stop with Escape, the Microphone key, or the same shortcut.
  6. Fix problems from Apple's checklist. Confirm Dictation is on, check language and region, and confirm the shortcut. Pick the right microphone under Keyboard > Dictation > Microphone source or System Settings > Sound > Input, raise input volume, keep the mic unobstructed, and reduce background noise or use a headset. If processing is not on-device, check the internet connection. If Voice Control is on, standard Dictation is unavailable (System Settings > Accessibility > Voice Control).

  • On Apple silicon Macs, dictation for supported languages is processed on-device and works offline; on Intel Macs or unsupported languages, audio is sent to Apple. Keyboard settings shows whether processing is on-device.
  • Dictating into a search box may send the resulting text to the search provider.
  • Apple lists more than 60 language and region variants for Dictation and more than 40 for on-device dictation.
  • Server-processed requests are not stored unless you opt in to Improve Siri and Dictation. You can delete history under System Settings > Siri > Delete Siri & Dictation History.
