How to dictate punctuation on Mac and Windows
Spoken punctuation is a command, not a guess. Pause briefly before and after the command word so the engine does not treat it as part of the sentence.
- Say the mark on macOS Dictation. Apple documents comma, period, question mark, new line, new paragraph, caps on, caps off, all caps, and numeral. Auto-punctuation for commas, periods, and question marks can be toggled in Keyboard > Dictation for supported languages.
- Say the mark in Windows Voice typing. Microsoft documents period, comma, question mark, new line, and new paragraph, plus editing commands such as stop listening, delete that, scratch that, select that, undo that, and press enter. Automatic punctuation is a setting in the Voice typing flyout gear.
- Mix commands and words in Voice Access. Windows 11 Voice Access lets you dictate with inline commands such as Hello comma how are you question mark. Automatic punctuation is off by default.
- Pause before and after the command. A short pause before and after comma, period, or new paragraph keeps the engine from writing the word instead of the mark. Speak the rest of the sentence at a normal conversational pace.
- Use auto-punctuation when it is available. macOS Dictation can insert commas, periods, and question marks in supported languages. Windows Voice typing has an automatic punctuation toggle. Voice Access leaves automatic punctuation off until you turn it on.

- Windows Voice Access automatic punctuation starts off; you must enable it if you want it.
- Windows 10 dictation does not mention automatic punctuation in Microsoft's current notes.
- Command words still need a brief pause so they are not transcribed as literal text.
