The honest take

Where each one actually wins.

💬

Wispr Flow

Cloud-based, which is exactly what makes it work well: it supports the most platforms here (Mac, Windows, iPhone, Android) and a browser demo, with a generous 14-day free trial and no card required to start. The tradeoff is that your audio has to leave your device to be transcribed, and dictation stops working without an internet connection.

🎙️

Superwhisper

Genuinely privacy-conscious — it can run entirely offline on Apple Silicon, and its free tier is usable forever, not just a trial. Its paid annual plan ($84.99/yr) is a little cheaper than WhisperJot's. What it doesn't offer: a way to guarantee cloud models are never used if you turn them on, and no Linux build.

🔒

WhisperJot

The only one of the three that gives you both modes on every plan: fully-local engines that keep audio on your device (the default), and an opt-in cloud engine — Jot Cloud — behind an explicit consent gate, with no server-side audio storage, for fast dictation with no model download or RAM pressure. It's also the only one with a Windows and Linux build, and pricing is one flat number with no lifetime upsell or model tiers. What it doesn't have yet: a free trial or a permanent free tier.

Questions

Straight answers.

Is Wispr Flow on-device or cloud-based?

Cloud-based. Wispr Flow's own help center confirms transcription needs an active internet connection, and dictation fails if you go offline (audio is saved and transcribed once you reconnect).

Does Superwhisper work offline?

Yes — its local models run fully offline on Apple Silicon Macs. Its free tier uses smaller local models; larger local models and any cloud AI models are part of the paid Pro tier or used optionally if you enable them.

What's the cheapest private, on-device dictation app?

WhisperJot ($99/year, ≈$8.25/mo) and Superwhisper Pro ($84.99/year, ≈$7.08/mo) are priced close together, and Superwhisper's annual plan is slightly cheaper on paper. Both are local by default. The difference: WhisperJot treats the two modes as one deliberate choice — exactly one optional cloud engine (Jot Cloud), gated behind an explicit first-use consent prompt, with audio never stored on our servers — and it's the only one of the two with a Linux build.

Which dictation app supports Linux?

Of these three, only WhisperJot ships a Linux build (currently in beta, alongside stable macOS and Windows releases). Wispr Flow and Superwhisper are Mac/Windows/ mobile only.
