Microphone not working for dictation?
Check input, volume and permission

First select the microphone you intend to use in your operating system's Sound input settings and check its input level. An unexpected input device, low volume or disabled recording permission can prevent speech from reaching a dictation app. The vendor guidance does not rank causes by frequency. Follow the checks for your platform below before switching transcription tools.

Before you start

  • macOS 15 Sequoia or macOS 26 Tahoe for the Mac paths; Windows 11 for the Windows paths.
  • A connected, working internal or external microphone.
  • Follow only your operating system's checks. Per-app recording permissions are distinct from standard macOS Dictation settings.

Checks to try in order

  1. Mac: select the input. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Sound (sidebar) > Input > select the device. Choose the microphone you intend to use.
  2. Mac: adjust input volume. Drag the input volume slider on the same Input pane to adjust the recording level.
  3. Mac: allow the recording app. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and toggle access for the app that records. The Recording Indicator in Control Center shows recent or current microphone use. This is per-app permission, not a switch for standard Dictation itself.
  4. Mac: check the Dictation override. For standard macOS Dictation, check Keyboard > Dictation > Microphone source (or Automatic). This is the Dictation-specific microphone selection.
  5. Windows: allow recording. Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. Turn on Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone. Review Choose which apps can access your microphone; for non-Store apps enable Let desktop apps access your microphone. Desktop apps cannot be toggled individually.
  6. Windows: choose and test input. Open Start > Settings > System > Sound > Input > Choose a device for speaking or recording. Select your microphone, then use Sound > device arrow > Microphone test > Start test / Stop test / Play and adjust the input volume slider.
  7. Windows: run the troubleshooter. Open Settings > System > Sound > Advanced > Troubleshoot common sound problems > Input devices and follow the input troubleshooter.

Still not working?

On Mac, compare your selected input and recording-app permissions with Apple's linked guides. On Windows, follow Microsoft's input troubleshooter; its microphone article also documents an audio-driver reinstall if the earlier checks fail. A separate dictation app cannot compensate for a microphone that does not record. Why does my microphone work in one app but not dictation?

Check the input selected by the dictation feature as well as operating-system settings. macOS Dictation has its own Microphone source selection, and recording apps have per-app permissions. Windows also separates app access from desktop app access, so a working microphone alone does not establish recording permission.

Where do I allow microphone access on Windows 11?

Go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. Enable Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone, then check the app list. Non-Store apps also need Let desktop apps access your microphone; those desktop apps cannot be toggled individually.

Will a different dictation app fix a microphone problem?
