Google Docs voice typing not working?
Check browser support and mic access

First use the latest Chrome, Edge or Safari and open Tools > Voice typing. Confirm that the microphone works and the browser can access it. Google's checks cover unavailable input, quiet speech and background noise, without ranking a most common cause. If only commands fail, check language requirements separately from ordinary voice typing.

Before you start

  • The latest Chrome, Edge or Safari; Firefox is not listed in Google's supported browsers.
  • A microphone that is on and working.
  • For voice commands, both account language and document language must be English. A Workspace administrator may disable the feature.

Checks to try in order

  1. Use a supported browser. Open Docs in the latest Chrome, Edge or Safari, then choose Tools > Voice typing.
  2. Allow browser microphone access. In Chrome, use Chrome menu > Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Microphone to check the site's permission. The prompt offers Allow while visiting the site or Allow this time. Choose the default microphone with the down arrow next to Microphone.
  3. Check the physical and system input. Make sure the microphone is plugged in and works. Check System Settings on Mac or Control Panel on PC, and make sure another application is not using the microphone.
  4. Improve the input level. For trouble hearing you, Google recommends moving to a quiet room, plugging in an external microphone or changing the microphone's input volume.
  5. Check command language and timing. Voice commands require English for both account and document language. Speak slowly and clearly, pausing before and after each command. Check that the microphone bubble shows the correct command; say Undo to reverse.
  6. Restart for a microphone failure. If the microphone still is not working after the connection and system checks, Google's troubleshooting list includes restarting your computer.

Why this happens

Browser or administrator restrictions

Google lists Chrome, Edge and Safari. A Workspace administrator may turn voice typing off.

Microphone cannot be heard

Permission, another app using the mic, a low input level or noise can interrupt speech input.

Command language differs

Voice typing supports many languages, but voice commands require English account and document languages.

Still not working?

Follow Google's microphone checklist through checking the hardware, system settings, other applications and restarting the computer. On a managed Workspace account, the feature may have been turned off by an administrator; that is separate from a microphone failure. If you want another way to enter text, WhisperJot can dictate into the focused app without depending on Docs voice typing. Its local engines provide offline transcription after download, but that does not make Google Docs itself offline or resolve browser and hardware permissions.

WhisperJot is an alternative

WhisperJot is a separate dictation app with one hotkey in any app. Jot Local and Jot Local Pro use local engines by default and work offline after a one-time model download. Choose Jot Local for fast, short utterances or Jot Local Pro for long-form accuracy. This provides an alternative way to enter text; it does not repair built-in dictation. A working microphone and the permissions needed to record are still necessary.

Frequently asked questions

Does Google Docs voice typing only work in Chrome?

No. Google's documentation lists the latest versions of Chrome, Edge and Safari. Firefox is not listed. The Chrome microphone settings path in this guide applies specifically to Chrome; it is not a settings path for the other browsers.

Why do words appear but voice commands fail?

Voice commands are available only in English, and both account language and document language must be English. Speak slowly and clearly with a pause around each command. Check the microphone bubble for the recognized command and use Undo to reverse it.

Why is Google Docs voice typing unavailable at work?

Google says a Workspace administrator may turn the feature off. Browser support and a working microphone also matter, so check those prerequisites. An administrator restriction and a microphone input failure require different next steps; changing the microphone cannot enable an administratively disabled feature.
