Draft Scrivener scenes by voice

Select or create the scene document in Scrivener's Binder, click its editor, and dictate a short passage. Stop to review names, dialogue, and paragraph breaks before continuing. Keep synopsis and planning notes separate from the manuscript text.

Choose the manuscript target

Scrivener separates the project structure in the Binder from the text in the editor. Confirm the selected document before recording, particularly when switching between research, synopsis material, and the draft. A visible scene title does not by itself establish where the insertion cursor is.

  1. Open a scratch project or a scene you are ready to edit.
  2. Select the scene document in the Binder and click the body of its editor.
  3. Dictate one paragraph, stop, and confirm it appeared in the intended document.

Capture a small unit of the scene

This short scene is an authored illustration, not recorded output. Speak a manageable passage, then check the punctuation and paragraph structure. For dialogue-heavy scenes, review each change of speaker rather than assuming recognition will place every quotation mark correctly.

Add recurring character and place names to vocabulary when they repeatedly need correction. Treat unusual capitalization and invented spellings as items to verify, even after adding them.

Mara stopped outside the observatory. The light above the door was still burning, although the village had lost power an hour earlier.

Someone inside moved a chair.

She put the letter back in her coat and knocked.

Revise without losing the voice of the passage

Dictation writes into the focused editor; it does not rearrange the Binder or choose compile settings. Scrivener's project storage and any synchronization are separate from the local speech engine.

  1. Check character names, tense, point of view, and paragraph breaks.
  2. Move planning comments to the place you use for notes instead of leaving them in the manuscript.
  3. Keep cleanup light if preserving the original wording matters, and compare any rewritten text with your intended sentence.
  4. Confirm the scene remains in the right part of the project and use your normal project backup routine.

Questions

Will speaking a scene title switch documents?

Not in this workflow. Select the intended document with Scrivener's controls and click its editor before dictating.

Should I use heavy cleanup for fiction?

Only if rephrasing fits your intent. Start with None or Light and review the result; deliberate repetition, dialogue fragments, and unusual phrasing can be part of a character's voice.
