Switch from Apple Dictation to WhisperJot
Install WhisperJot, finish permissions and model setup, and choose a recording shortcut different from Apple's. Test it in a familiar editor before changing your routine. You can evaluate the apps alongside each other without uninstalling or immediately disabling Apple Dictation.

Keep what already works as a baseline
Apple Dictation can already enter text into editable fields. Its processing behavior varies by setup; Apple's Keyboard settings explain whether general dictation is processed on-device. Apple Voice Control is a separate feature for navigation and commands, so identify which one you currently depend on.
WhisperJot is worth evaluating when its vocabulary, shortcuts, engine selection, history, or cleanup address a specific gap in your workflow. Compare that gap directly instead of assuming every third-party feature is necessary.
Set separate recording controls
- In macOS System Settings, open Keyboard and inspect the Dictation shortcut.
- Install WhisperJot, complete its microphone and text-insertion permissions, and download the selected local model.
- Choose a WhisperJot shortcut that does not trigger Apple's dictation at the same time.
- Open a scratch document and try one short recording with each app, stopping one before starting the other.
Compare the tasks that matter
Use comparable cleanup settings for an initial comparison, then try extra cleanup separately. If both apps meet your needs, decide whether the added settings and paid plan are worthwhile. If you need Voice Control's navigation commands, evaluate that requirement independently of speech-to-text.

Questions
Must I turn off Apple Dictation first?
No. Use different shortcuts and avoid recording with both at once during the comparison. You can change Apple's settings later if you decide you no longer need its Dictation shortcut.
Is Apple Dictation always cloud-based?
No. Apple tells users to check the explanation in Keyboard settings for their setup. Do not assume all Apple Dictation sends speech to a server.
