Check that dictation works offline

Finish sign-in and model setup while connected, select a local engine, disconnect all network paths, and dictate into a local document. Success shows that this configuration can transcribe without a connection. It does not establish what the app sends when connected or what another app does with the text.

Prepare while connected

The browser demo uses a cloud transcription path and is not the desktop offline test. Use the installed app and a local scratch document. Select the engine explicitly so there is no ambiguity about the configuration being checked.

  1. Sign in and confirm account access before the test. Offline use still requires periodic account verification.
  2. Select Jot Local or Jot Local Pro and finish its model download. Run one short dictation successfully.
  3. Record the engine, model, app version, cleanup settings, and sync settings.
  4. If optional local LLM cleanup is enabled, verify its model and local runtime are ready too; otherwise disable it for this test.

Disconnect and reproduce

  1. Turn off Wi-Fi and disconnect Ethernet and any tethered connection. A VPN setting alone does not disconnect the underlying network.
  2. Confirm the computer cannot load a new, uncached web page. Keep your local editor open.
  3. Dictate a new neutral sentence and check whether it appears correctly.
  4. Repeat with a second sentence. Record success, any error, and any cleanup stage that fails separately.
  5. Reconnect when finished and retain only the test material you need.

Record the evidence without overstating it

A disconnected test cannot show whether connected use uploads data, queues events, or synchronizes text later. A network audit is a different procedure requiring traffic observation over a defined interval and an explanation of every connection. Do not turn a successful offline trial into a claim that the entire application never contacts a server.

Jot Cloud is opt-in and sends audio for transcription while selected. Optional sync and the destination app's own saving behavior need separate consideration. A cloud-backed editor can upload text even when the speech-to-text stage was local.

Questions

Does turning off Wi-Fi prove there are no uploads?

No. First check Ethernet and tethering too. Successful disconnected transcription demonstrates offline operation for that setup; it does not audit connected traffic or behavior after reconnection.

Can WhisperJot stay offline indefinitely?

Local models do not need a network connection for each transcription after setup, but account access needs periodic verification. Consult the current sign-in and offline-use help before planning a long disconnected period.
